$5 Pints

Recently redesigned, the Great Bear Pub has gone a great way from its skeezy predecessor. Occasional live music shows it’s trying to be more than a local watering hole, and it should be. The on-tap selection is strong, and it’s open reasonably late (as is their kitchen though Denny’s next door makes late-night food a non-issue one way or another). It also has an adjacent liquor store that is open till 9am-11pm every day.

I’m a pretty big fan of neighborhood pubs, so I suppose I should be a big fan of this place.  In this case, it’s a neighborhood pub out of necessity: if you need to drive to it, there are more popular places just as far so most people there walk to it.  The night I went the service was atrocious but I don’t have a large enough sample size to state it’s the norm.  There is karaoke on Wednesdays.

Pint of daily special: $4.50 (Mon: MGD, Tues: Pilsner, Wed: Rickard’s Red, Thurs: Rickard’s Honey Brown, Fri: Coors Light, Sat: Molson, Sun: Rickard’s White)
Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat - Pitcher of daily special: $13.75

A new pub in a newer area of Surrey, the layout is ideal for seeing everyone but having privacy.  The decor is great although its tucked away in a corner of the complex.  The food is decently priced and the pints are full-sized.

Pint of Trinity Lager: $5

5 scoops of housemade ice creams: $5

This pub is hidden behind Metrotown one block south of Kingsway.  The place is large enough to host banquets and has a big screen tv.  Beside bottles, pitchers, and sleeves (pints) they also have “FF [firefighter] sleeves” which are larger sleeves for $0.75-$1 more.  As much as I appreciate the variety, I dislike that drink sizes are standardised by the government.  Also, although belonging to firefighters (I assume), it’s open to everyone.  There’s free pool on Sundays.

A true relic, the Shadow is often SFU’s de facto student pub. The layout is perfectly cozy: private enough that you can have a personal conversation but open enough that you can just hear everyone’s voices (although not their conversations).
