Just northwest of the Pitt River Bridge across from Costco, Dewy’s is a hidden gem.  Although a bit out of the way, the daily special is very respectable and wings night is certainly worthwhile.

Granted, beautiful settings and comfortable atmospheres, beer is still on the higher end as far as restaurants go.  Though, to be fair, a pitcher does dole out a full four-and-a-half pints.

Pitcher of Alexander Keith’s: $20.50
Pint of Keith’s: $6

On Main Mall and Agricultural Road in UBC, 99 Chairs doesn’t give off any air of providing alcohol.  Known for its popular but not great cinnamon buns, 99 Chairs’ location and lack of considerate immediate competition draws the very busy and the very lazy.  It also offers glasses of beer, perfect for the straight edger you’re trying to get to drink.

Pitcher of Russell Lager: $12.24
Pint of Rusell Lager: $4.00
“Glass” of Russell Lager: $2.50

This pub is hidden behind Metrotown one block south of Kingsway.  The place is large enough to host banquets and has a big screen tv.  Beside bottles, pitchers, and sleeves (pints) they also have “FF [firefighter] sleeves” which are larger sleeves for $0.75-$1 more.  As much as I appreciate the variety, I dislike that drink sizes are standardised by the government.  Also, although belonging to firefighters (I assume), it’s open to everyone.  There’s free pool on Sundays.

Cafe du Soleil is at the core of The Drive.  A couple blocks north of Commercial Station, this vegetarian cafe boasts sandwiches, soups, wraps, smoothies, and beer.  Even more characteristic of The Drive, some items seem wholly overpriced while other seem to be mostly financed by the other items.  But at $5 for some soups and sandwiches, things might even out if you don’t just go to drink.  There’s a wide variety of tables and booths for any type of groups and a small stage.

Pitchers (everything): $16.55

A true relic, the Shadow is often SFU’s de facto student pub. The layout is perfectly cozy: private enough that you can have a personal conversation but open enough that you can just hear everyone’s voices (although not their conversations).

Just east of Guildford Mall and The Mirage Nightclub is a small triangle-shaped pub with a semi-enclosed patio and mysterious doors on the mezzanine.  Despite its small footprint, the space is maximized with dozens of tables.  On a Thursday the kitchen closed at 11.
